Today, during the year-end cleaning, I unexpectedly unearthed a 17-reed copper sheng (mouth organ) from the 1970s in a cluttered storage room that hadn't been tidied for ages.
I bought it over a decade ago when the musical instrument shop at Karl Heng Enterprise in Bras Basah Complex (Bai Sheng Lou) was having a closing-down sale. It came together with a banhu (fiddle), several dongxiao (vertical bamboo flutes), and dizi (transverse bamboo flutes), among other items.
Time flies, and it has been decades since I last touched this instrument. The main reason for buying it was nostalgia. I remember playing this exact type of sheng when I joined the National Theatre Chinese Orchestra around the 1970s. Seeing it again now feels as though time has returned to my youth.
